Extreme Makeover in Charlotte!

Even during the flurry of construction traffic in Charlotte, NC, news of another home given to a family by the show in 2005 was covering the news.  That family is in foreclosure although a deal is to be hammered out by Chase.

The Charlotte home was in a different kind of trouble, it was dangerous to the occupants and neighbors health due to extreme mold.  The family, winners from an entry of thousands of submittals was selected to be the next extreme makeover home winners.

So from a modest humble house, to one giant of house in an east Charlotte neighborhood it went.  The unveiling is to be broadcasted on Sunday nights show.  For the last seven days the family was in Puerto Rico and in the mean time area business's and neighbor's came together and demolished one house, while buiding a new one in its place.

As a local realtor I went over to see this massive undertaking mostly to view the surrounding homes and communities (they don't show you that on the program and I've watched it regularly). This particular neighborhood is lovely with mature trees and well-kept homes, old-timey neighborhood feel with sidewalks and homes that aren't sitting right up to the easements on the streets...it's a beautiful community and it was exciting to walk up right to the construction site. The workers are clanking and hammering, hooting and hollering as the crowd cheered them on for objectives being met. It looked like fireants on a mound when you kick it!

Here's my dilemma though. They've built this beautiful, 5000 sq. ft. house that overpowers everything around it. I am amazed that there was enough land to construct such a huge home. Why so large? It doesn't fit in at all with the neighborhood so why so "extremely" different? Will the Kings beable to cover the electricity, gas, water and upkeep? Will they now have to charge those very people they are trying to help with the childcare service they offer? Will they become the envy of the neighborhood as people sometimes do? I wonder and I will monitor this as I am able. Right now though, I'm going to the website to see if they actually completed it in 7 days--that inself is hard to believe and considering how far they had to go when I saw it Friday night...doesn't look possible!
